2. Syria Assad: Game of Thrones – Syrian Edition

Once again, I came to the king, begging him to surrender. He told me to bring him my father’s head. Then he turned to his pyromancer. “Burn them all,” he said. “Burn them in their homes. Burn them in their beds.” Tell me, if your precious Renly commanded you to kill your own father and stand by while thousands of men, women, and children burned alive, would you have done it? Would you have kept your oath then?
First, I killed the pyromancer, and then, when the king turned to flee, I drove my sword into his back. “Burn them all,” he kept saying. “Burn them all.” I don’t think he expected to die. He meant to burn with the rest of us and rise again, reborn as a dragon, to turn his enemies to ash. I slit his throat to make sure that didn’t happen. That’s where Ned Stark found me.

Assad... The second coming of Aerys?

Assad… The second coming of Aerys?

Lets’ sift through the whole Jaime being superman side story and settle on Aerys the Mad King. Eliminating your very own civilian population with flames which in Syria’s case would be chemical weapons is crossing the “red line” and has been described by various nations:

Slaughter defies any code of morality” – John Kerry, US Secretary of State.

On that terrible night (of the chemical attacks), the world saw in gruesome detail the terrible nature of chemical weapons. These things happened, the facts cannot be denied. … The question now is what the United States of America and the international community is prepared to do about it.” – Barack Obama, US President.

France is determined to penalize the use of chemical weapons by Assad’s regime and to dissuade with a forceful and firm response.” – Jean Marc-Ayrault, French Prime Minister.

What we have seen in Syria are appalling scenes of death and suffering because of the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime,” he said. “I don’t believe we can let that stand.” – David Cameron, UK Prime Minister.

So now that we’ve established that Bashar al-Assad is the second coming of Aerys the nut king at least according to the media lets take a little stroll through Bashar faction.
Aerys II Bashar is from the Alawite sect which is an ethnic minority in Syria but strangely rules the Sunni majority. He inherited the iron throne after the demise of his father. Up until the Arab Spring he was seen as a moderate/ hip/ funky option by the west compared to the old tossers in other regional powers.
Unfortunately, the uprising has rendered his position untenable. The big question though is “Why use chemical weapons when you’re winning?” I mean we can assume Bashar isn’t the brightest of fellows but still making the jump to Aerys II is a bit far fetched (I mean…he isn’t even blonde).
The United Nations recently confirmed chemical weapons were in fact used in Syria (no shit Sherlock) and pointed the finger squarely at Syria. it remains to be seen whether military force would be resorted to (to punish the offending regime and do absolutely anything but end the war). The recent U.S-Russia agreement has given the regime some breathing room…
Only a matter of time?

Only a matter of time?

However, how long before Assad ends up with a Lannister blade through his throat?  (err..*looks up* bac.. Never mind, You get the point)
